For some odd reason (booktok) I picked this book up.
Let me say, it was not what I was expecting. At first I felt like the author was rushing through the story. The sentences felt too short and introductions to the world quite direct, making it hard to get into. The first third of the book felt fast in a way that unnerved me a bit. Now I think it was purposeful, to allude to how quick the youth left the characters after graduations. How in the span of their lives, those college years were a blimp in their story.
Some might describe this as a love triangle, but the dynamic doesn’t fit that exactly. Here it is clear there are two distinct relationships, with two men who happen to have a relation to each other. If you want a thrilling romance that keeps you guessing who the FMC is going to pick, this might not be the book you are looking for.
Now the MMCs are Sam and Yash, long-time best friends. Sam is that one boyfriend every woman has at least once. The one that teaches you, even love cannot withstand incompatibility. That person that walks away from your life and you realize you just didn’t want to be alone, and the consequences that come with that. Now Yash, was like true young love. Him and Jordan feel intense, there is a supposed big build up. But while Sam was still in the picture, I did not see any indications of interest. Maybe that was the point, but to me it seemed unexpected. However, the romance between them was enjoyable, like each other knew what they were getting into, and that they chose it.
Jordan is the protagonist, I mention her last because that is how she feels in the book. A backdrop to her relationship with these two boys and what it means to lose them. She felt like a forgettable character who herself wanted to be like the boys(or what they represented) she fell in love with.
It is clear that a lot of research went into understanding what studying English and literature means, or perhaps the author was already familiar with the extensive array of authors required in academia. As a regular person who reads for fun and is currently studying chemistry, there are so many references to authors and literature that I wanted but could not understand. There were a considerable amount, and personally having to google everything sum pages to understand a reference is not what I read books for. Any English major that picks this book up will certainly love the references.
My final conclusion is that the author did manage to invoke sadness in me, however by the end, the characters did not feel as real as I thought they could have been. It was a forgettable story(my opinion) but not a bad read.
